Jason S. Adelman, MD, MS

Internal Medicine
Profile Headshot

Overview

Dr. Adelman is Associate Dean for Quality and Patient Safety, Director of the hospital-supported Center for Patient Safety Science (CPSS), Program Director of the Patient Safety and Health Services Research (PSR) Fellowship, Vice Chair for Quality & Patient Safety, Department of Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and System Associate Chief Quality Officer for Patient Safety & Learning Health System Science, NewYork-Presbyterian.

A hospitalist by training, Dr. Adelman pursued patient safety after becoming aware of the sometimes catastrophic medical errors that occur in the hospital environment. Currently in his operations role, Dr. Adelman leads system-wide quality and patient safety initiatives. As Director of CPSS, he leads teams that mobilize responsive research programs to ensure that CUIMC becomes a national leader in patient safety. As Contact PI for EQUIP, a Learning Health System (LHS) E-StaR Center funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Dr. Adelman helps steer the creation of new models of learning health system infrastructure to develop a cadre of diverse researchers who generate evidence to ultimately improve health outcomes as quickly, broadly, and equitably as possible. As Director of the established PSR Fellowship, he mentors fellows in projects addressing many of the challenges facing hospitalized patients today, including sepsis, hospital-acquired infections (CAUTIs, CLABSIs), and medication errors.

Dr. Adelman is principal investigator of multiple studies funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and AHRQ. Dr. Adelman’s research — published in multiple high-impact journals including JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, and JAMA Pediatrics — has led to national patient safety recommendations and regulations from The Joint Commission and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).  Dr. Adelman was named one of the leading National Patient Safety Experts by Becker’s Hospital Review five times between 2017 and 2023, and in 2022 was the recipient of both the John M. Eisenberg Excellence in Mentorship Award from AHRQ and the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Awards for Individual Lifetime Achievement from The Joint Commission.

Research

Leveraging health information technology, Dr. Adelman leads multiple federally funded and hospital-supported research projects and programs to advance patient safety research, and health equity and policy, to develop the next generation of clinician-researchers in this critical field. He developed and validated the Wrong-Patient Retract-and-Reorder Measure to quantify wrong-patient errors, the first Health IT safety measure endorsed by the National Quality Forum. Results of research using the measure to evaluate patient safety interventions have informed national regulations and recommendations issued by the Joint Commission and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT in the Department of Health and Human Services.
